Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s no shortage of stellar choices when it comes to surfing in Costa Rica. Straddled by the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the country has over 800 miles of gorgeous shoreline, and a slew of surf spots where you can test your mettle on epic point breaks, or learn the basics amid gentle waves. Leave your wet suit at home – the water temps hover around 80 degrees – and get ready for some serious fun and adventure while hanging ten in the land of Pura Vida.

Check here for more on Costa Rica beaches

Planning your vacation: surf seasons

If you’re wondering which months are best for surfing certain beaches, here’s a general summary:

Central and Southern Pacific beaches (Jaco, Playa Hermosa, Esterillos, Bejuco, Manuel Antonio, Dominical and Pavones) peak between May and November, which coincides with the country’s rainy season.

Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo and Playa Cocles) enjoys its biggest swells from November through the end of March

Northern Pacific & Nicoya Peninsula including Nosara, Tamarindo, Playa del Coco, Avellanas, Playa Grande, and Santa Teresa/Mal Pais have the most consistent waves, but December through April are considered the best

Best beach for novice surfers

For tame waves, breathtaking scenery and a ton of experienced surf instructors, you can’t go wrong in the booming beach town of Tamarindo – Costa Rica’s original surf Mecca. Surf camps are literally everywhere and instructors offer both one-on-one instruction and group classes. This north Pacific beach is renowned for its steady yet gentle surf, where you can practice your balancing skills before taking on the bigger waves of nearby Playa Avellanas and Playa Grande.

A little something for everyone

Check here for more on surfing in Costa Rica

Head to the southern Nicoya Peninsula for one of the coolest surf spots: the sister beaches of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. Arguably one of the country’s most stunning stretches of coastline, these rugged beaches offer a medley of breaks to choose from, and when the southwestern swell comes in, the action gets hot. The area has a decidedly bohemian vibe with tons of funky shops, surf camps and plenty of long and short boards that you can rent by the hour, day or week.

Larger-than-life waves for veteran surfers

Less than two hours from the capital of San Jose, Playa Hermosa (Spanish for beautiful beach) lures boarders with challenging waves and a more tranquil scene than the neighboring party town of Jaco. Hermosa hosts both regional and international surf competitions, and has been rated the second best surf spot in all of Costa Rica. The small community of residents is dedicated to the sport, and you’ll find plenty of wave riders showing off their skills on the beach’s wild tubular hollows.

Ride one of the globe’s longest left breaks

For a thrilling two-to-three minute ride on one of the world’s longest left breaks, Pavones is your ticket to the unbridled waters of the Southern Pacific. This legendary left point break draws surfers from the world over, and when the swell is big, this powerhouse can deliver a two-mile ride. This surfer hideout is somewhat off the tourist trail, thanks to its remote location on the interior side of the Golfo Dulce. The waves really pick up during the green season months of May through November, when every hotel and beach vacation rental books up in the tiny surf haven.

The green season: one of the numerous aliases for Costa Rica’s wetter months of May through November. It’s also known as the low tourism period, the rainy season and “invierno,” which translates as winter. While they all mean the same thing – smaller tourist crowds, discounted rates on Costa Rica vacation rentals and hotels, and regular bouts of afternoon showers – we prefer the term green season as it most aptly conveys the spectacular lushness that prevails. Even the dry grasslands of Guanacaste, the country’s most arid province, bursts with emerald greenery and Technicolor shades during this time of year. Here are five good reasons why you should leave your weather worries behind and experience the beauty of the green season.

Cheaper accommodations

While Mother Nature operates on her own clock, the green season typically begins in mid May and lasts through early December. Most companies in the tourist industry begin offering lower rates on hotels, vacation packages and beach rentals starting May 15. The savings can be phenomenal – anywhere from 15 to 40 percent off the high season tariffs. And if you offer to pay in cash or are planning an extended stay, you may be able to negotiate an even better deal. Look for special low season fares when you book your tours and accommodations and don’t be afraid to ask about discounts when paying in cash.

Adventure tours galore

Check here For more on different Costa Rica activities and areas we offer villas

A little rain won’t hamper your adventures in the land of Pura Vida. In fact, certain tours and activities are in their prime during the green season months. If you’re a wildlife buff, head to the Caribbean hamlet of Tortuguero to observe nesting sea turtles in action. July through October is the nesting period for green sea turtles, though loggerheads and hawksbills may also be spotted. Whitewater rafting is also most thrilling during this time, when rains have swelled the rivers to maximum levels, ensuring an adrenaline-pumping ride. And veteran surfers know that the green season months mean marathon waves in south Pacific hotspots like Pavones and Dominical.

Smaller crowds and empty beaches

Whether you’re planning a lazy beach holiday in Manuel Antonio, or have dreamt up the ultimate in romantic getaways, you can count on fewer crowds from May through November. June and July witness a slight spike in tourists with summer student groups, but a September or October visit guarantees a peaceful trip with smaller numbers of travelers and more one-on-one time with your naturalist guides.

Less expensive transportation

From your international flight to your in-country car rental, prices will be much easier on the wallet. Costa Rica boasts two international airports – Liberia and San Jose – offering more choices when booking your flight. With advance reservations and promo deals, you can save upwards of $200 per ticket during the rainy season months, outside of major holidays. If you’re headed to popular north Pacific beaches such as Playa del Coco, Papagayo, Flamingo or Tamarindo, look for low season discounted fares into the Liberia airport, a one-hour drive away.

Warm, tropical rain showers

Similar to other equatorial countries with two distinct seasons, the rainy period in Costa Rica is usually characterized by sunny mornings with afternoon thunderstorms and showers. It seldom rains all day. Plan your major adventure tours for the morning and then head back to your luxury digs for an afternoon waterworks display. It may begin drizzling as early as 2 p.m., but the showers generally start around 4 p.m. and last a few hours – the perfect timing for a pre-cocktail siesta!

Are you in the midst of planning your Costa Rica vacation and need some quick answers to commonly asked questions? From entry requirements to local driving conditions and drinking water, here’s what you need to know before packing your bags.

Check here for information on the 2 International Air Ports in Costa Rica

Q. What are the entry requirements?

For citizens of the United States, Canada, and most EU countries, Costa Rica immigration requires a valid passport and proof of onward travel for entry. Most tourists are granted a 90-day stay upon arrival. If you are flying in on a one-way ticket, airline officials will ask for onward travel documentation, in the form of a bus or airline ticket.

Q. When is the best time to travel in Costa Rica?

That depends on your personal preferences, but in terms of the weather, if you want guaranteed sunshine, the dry season runs from mid December through April. This is labeled Costa Rica’s ‘high tourism period’ as it’s the most popular time for most vacationers. The rainy season (a.k.a. green season) months of May through November typically have fewer crowds and discounted rates on Costa Rica vacation rentals and hotel stays. Both seasons have their perks, and it rarely rains continuously in the green season, so visitors have plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Check here for more tips on driving in Costa Rica

Q. How are the driving conditions and should I rent a car?

The majority of Costa Rica’s major highways are in good shape, and driving here – just like that in any big city – requires a dose of patience. The best advice is to stay alert for unexpected surprises and avoid long trips at night when visibility is compromised. A GPS system comes in handy for navigating poorly signed parts of the country, and a car rental is definitely recommended for travelers who want to get off the tourist path and explore on their own. Most car rental agencies will include a GPS for a small daily fee. Gasoline prices are currently hovering around $5.50 a gallon.

Q. Are there any medical concerns or mandatory vaccines?

Unless you’re flying in from certain South American or African countries, there are no mandatory vaccines to enter Costa Rica. The country boasts one of the best health care systems in Latin America and has several first-class hospitals in and around San Jose and Liberia, with English speaking staff. The only health concern is that of Dengue Fever, which is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue is not especially prevalent and can be prevented with liberal use of insect repellent.

Q. Do I need to exchange money and can I use my credit cards?

The local currency is known as the colon, and the exchange rate is currently around 500 CRC to 1 USD. Most tour operators, restaurants, hotels and business in major tourist hubs accept U.S. dollars, but the rate may not be as favorable. You can withdraw both dollars and Costa Rica colones using your ATM card from banks throughout the country. Additionally, most businesses accept Visa and Mastercard, but it’s best to verify payment methods beforehand.

Q. Can I drink the tap water in Costa Rica?

Yes, the tap water is safe to drink throughout the country unless you see signage that indicates the water is not potable. If you have a sensitive system or are traveling to very remote areas, you may consider purchasing bottled water to play it safe.

Q. Is there an exit tax at the airport?

Whether you’re departing from the Liberia (LIR) or San Jose (SJO) international airports, you will be required to pay a $28 departure tax before checking in for your flight. This tax is mandatory, and can be paid in cash, with dollars or colones, or by major credit card. If you are leaving the country overland or by ocean liner, this exit tax is waived.

You don’t have to been a seasoned angler to appreciate Costa Rica’s epic sportfishing. Rain or shine, Atlantic coast or Pacific, the fishing is truly phenomenal any time of year. Cast your line inshore for red snapper, roosterfish and snook, or head into deeper waters for the prize-winning beasts – black marlin and sailfish. Costa Rica sportfishing is rated among the best in the world, and the central Pacific town of Quepos is the frequent site of international tournaments, including the recent 2013 IGFA World Offshore Championship at Marina Pez Vela.

Quepos & Manuel Antonio in the center of all the action

Check here for tours in Costa Rica we have to offer

Marina Pez Vela has attracted several headlining catch and release tournaments such as the 2012 Quepos Billfish Cup and the renowned 2011 Costa Rica Classic. The world-class facility just hosted the “Olympics of Sportfishing,” which lured more than 200 die-hard anglers from around the globe. Participants fished for marlin, sailfish, and big-eye tuna along with wahoo and mahi mahi (also known as dorado). While trophies were awarded for various categories, the crew that shone brightest was that on the EPIC, captained by Mike Alligood, with Randal Garcia Canales as mate. The team, which is based at Costa Rica’s Los Sueños marina, released 26 sailfish and one blue marlin, earning a total of 5,700 points. The Quepos marina is just five miles from the pristine beaches and diverse wildlife of neighboring Manuel Antonio and its national park.

Other notable offshore sportfishing hotspots

Check here for vacation villas in Manuel Antonio and Quepos area

In Costa Rica, Pacific sailfish are most abundant from mid December through the end of April. In addition to Quepos, other prime destinations for hooking these beauties include Jaco, Playa del Coco, Flamingo and Tamarindo. Blue and black marlin often tip the scales at 500 pounds and also peak during these same months, which coincide with the country’s dry season. Top marlin spots include Drake Bay, Dominical and Golfito – located on the southern Pacific coast. The slightly smaller striped marlin can also be boated year-round. On the Atlantic coast, Parismina and Barra del Colorado are notorious for their massive tarpon and award-winning snook. The tarpon bite is hot from late January through June, while August through November is ideal for landing fat snook.

Freshwater fishing on Lake Arenal

If you are searching for some freshwater action, look no further than Lake Arenal, where 33 square miles of seemingly placid waters are brimming with rainbow bass. Known locally as “guapote,” these fish put up an incredible fight, but the tasty results are well worth the effort! Created in 1979 for hydroelectric purposes, the man-made lake offers fabulous views of the gently active Arenal Volcano. The best months for catching guapote are March through July, though tourists have had great luck throughout the year. Local captains and tour operators offer half and full-day fishing excursions on the lake, where other catches may include tilapia and mojarra.

The cuisine in Costa Rica offers a kaleidoscope of tastes, flavors and textures – from the national dish of “gallo pinto,” to its succulent array of tropical fruits. Translated as “spotted rooster,” gallo pinto is a savory combination of rice, red or black beans, diced cilantro and hefty splash of Lizano sauce (similar to Worcestershire). It’s healthy, vegetarian-friendly, and you’ll find this staple in every restaurant and soda across the nation. If you’re searching for authentic – and inexpensive – food on your next Costa Rica vacation, pay a visit to any one of these family-owned cafes known as sodas for some delicious, home-cooked fare. You’ll find sodas in towns both large and small, so whether you’re staying in popular beach towns like Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo, or off the tourist trail, be sure to try some of these tasty cheap eats.

Check here for more about Costa Rica

Casado: a lunchtime specialty

For a satisfying, stick-to-your-ribs kind of meal, opt for a casado – which also means “married” in Spanish. One of the country’s most popular lunches, a casado will set you back between $4 and $6 and offers generous servings of rice, beans, cabbage salad, picadillo (minced potato or squash with herbs, spices, and sometimes chopped beef) and your choice of meat – chicken, pork, fish, or beef. Every soda has their own variation of the casado, which may also include tortillas, plantains or mashed potatoes. Be sure to try several to see which you like best!

Lighter fare

Looking for something a little less filling? Gallos are smaller portions of meat, vegetables, beans or cheese served with corn tortillas. They’re also incredibly reasonable at around $2. If you’re staying close to the ocean, most sodas will offer a selection of ceviches, made with fresh sea bass, shrimp or a mixture of seafood. Marinated in lime juice and served with either crackers or tortilla chips, ceviche makes for a wonderful appetizer or light lunch. A deep-fried empanada is the perfect snack for those on the go, and comes with a variety of fillings – cheese, beans, potatoes or your choice of lightly spiced meat.

More about San Jose here

Drinks au natural

Wet your whistle with a jugo natural – or refresco – made from fresh fruit mixed with water and a pinch of sugar. Local favorites include cas, tamarind, watermelon, pineapple and passion fruit. Or, go for a decadent, creamy batido blended with milk. Strawberry, banana, papaya and blackberry are all great choices for this healthy milkshake. And of course, you can never go wrong with a Costa Rican cafecito. The country’s fertile, volcanic soil yields some of the richest coffee, which can be ordered any time of day or night.

Tips on tipping

When paying your tab in a soda, keep in mind that tipping is not necessary nor is it expected. In fact, other than within the tourist industry, tipping is quite uncommon throughout Costa Rica. If you happen to be dining in a more formal restaurant, a 10 percent service charge will already be added to your bill, so no need to tip extra unless the service or meal warrants the occasion.

Searching for the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure on your next vacation, but want to avoid the tourist crowds? Look no further than Playa Dominical, a peaceful beach town prized by surfers and sun-lovers alike. A quick 30-minute jaunt south of Manuel Antonio, this burgeoning beach vacation destination offers miles of sandy shores, incredible wildlife watching opportunities, and a robust selection of vacation rental properties to choose from. And unlike some of its more developed neighbors, Dominical has retained its traditional, small-town feel, and is a fabulous spot for a family vacation or romantic getaway.

More Dominical Vacation Rentals Here

Surf, Sun and Adventure

Flanked by towering mountains covered in primary rainforest, Dominical is a place of stunning beauty. The surf is steady throughout the year, but really picks up from May-October when large swells bring epic waves. Take a dolphin and whale watching excursion to nearby Ballena Marine Park, located in Bahia Ballena (Whale Bay) – recently named one of the “hottest vacation destinations” by Travel and Leisure magazine. For those who want a little adventure, there’s no shortage of tours – including scuba diving, canopy zip-lines, horseback excursions and world-class sport fishing. Secluded beaches are the star of the show in this region, with several lovely stretches of pristine shoreline (Playa Uvita and Ojochal are favorites) framed by swaying palms.

Dominical Vacation Rentals Gaining Popularity

More on Costa Rica Beaches Here

According to a 2012 TripAdvisor survey, more travelers are taking an increased interest in vacation rentals, with more than 46 percent planning to stay in a home rental this year. The reason cited most often? More vacation for much less money. As opposed to a hotel room, most Costa Rica rental properties come with fully-equipped kitchens and offer tons more space along with bonuses like swimming pools, Jacuzzis and added privacy. On top of that, travelers also found vacation rentals much easier on the wallet, especially in light of last-minute specials that are offered during the low season. Of the 1,200 participants polled, 20 percent said they like the creature comforts of home, and 27 percent agreed that it’s easier – and more economical – to enjoy a holiday with family and friends in a vacation rental versus a hotel.

If the Central Valley is part of your upcoming Costa Rica vacation itinerary, be sure to include a visit to Alajuela’s Zoo Ave. While literally translated as “Bird Zoo,” this unique attraction is much more than a sanctuary for our feathered friends – Zoo Ave is a wildlife rescue and breeding center for the country’s orphaned and mistreated creatures. Managed by the Fundacion Restauracion de la Naturaleza, the non-profit refuge is home to more than 200 species, and boasts Central America’s largest collection of birds. Zoo Ave makes for a great Costa Rica activity for a family of all ages.

Check here for more info on San Jose Costa Rica

Feathered frenzy: Macaws, Peacocks and Quetzals

True to its name, Zoo Ave entices visitors with avian fauna of all shapes and colors – including parrots and peacocks that roam the grounds freely. The center cares for curassows, toucans, several types of endangered macaws that were once kept illegally as pets, along with the brilliant resplendent quetzal. With the help of specially-trained staff, volunteers and an onsite incubator, the zoo has successfully bred nearly 50 native species including scarlet and green macaws, black guans, and most recently, the king vulture. The new chick made headlines a couple of weeks ago, as this is the first of its kind to be bred in captivity in Latin America. Since the king vulture is on the verge of extinction, zoo keepers were thrilled with this latest addition to the refuge.

Zoo Ave: An ideal day trip for families

Spanning nearly 50 acres, Zoo Ave features a two-mile trail that winds beneath the shadow of towering bamboo. It’s a fantastic spot to spend a few hours and observe iconic wildlife that you may have missed on your nature tours. Giant iguanas stroll through the grounds freely, and guests can get up-close glimpse of peccaries, ostriches, cougars, crocodiles, deer, turtles, tapirs and several species of primates. Spider, howler, Capuchin and squirrel monkeys are all crowd pleasers with their playful antics and acrobatic moves. Many of the animals were rescued from the pet trade or arrived in poor health, and will spend the remainder of their lives as ambassadors for their kind.

Check here for more on Costa Rica Nature

Committed to wildlife conservation

Recognized for its wildlife preservation efforts, Zoo Ave is supported solely through the donations of its guests and though government funds. The veterinary staff work hard to rehabilitate injured animals and the center keeps a release site near Golfito in Piedras Blancas National Park. All entrance fees go toward the costs of food, maintenance and care of these animals. In short, the zoo is a terrific place to relax after a long day of adventure tours, or if you have a few spare hours before your departing flight from San Jose.

One of the sun-kissed beaches along Guanacaste’s famed Gold Coast, Tamarindo is an eclectic mix of outdoor pursuits, vibrant nightlife and creature comforts. The surf Mecca attracts thousands of tourists each year with its epic waves, laid-back ambiance and wide swathes of golden sands. Less than an hour’s drive from the Liberia international airport, this beach vacation destination offers the best of both worlds: contemporary amenities along with a healthy dose of authentic pura vida charm.

Check here for Tamarindo Vacation Rentals

A Great Place for Family Vacations: While the nightlife is downright sizzling with discos, live jams, and pulsating salsa marathons, Tamarindo at its core is a family-friendly destination. There are several tours in Tamarindo to choose from including canopy zip-lines to ATV excursions, this beach town offers a slew of adrenaline-pumping adventures that cater to kids of all ages. Kayak tours explore the lush estuaries of Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge, and park rangers escort guests along the shores of nearby Playa Grande, where enormous leatherback sea turtles can be seen nesting from October through March.

The Surf is Always Up! The town’s unofficial motto is “Surf, Eat and Party” – which is evident throughout the year. Surf shops and camps are chock-a-block, offering lessons and board rentals for novice wave riders who want to hang ten. Newbies can pick up their skills in the steady – but relatively tame waters of Tamarindo beach, or in neighboring Playa Langosta or Avellenas, where waves tend to be more consistent. Surf lessons can be taken one-on-one or as a group, and since the Pacific waters are always warm, no wet suit is needed!

Check here for more Costa Rica Beach info

Incredible Cuisine: While travelers to the area will have plenty of chances to sample Costa Rica’s national dish of Gallo Pinto (a savory blend of rice and beans), the presence of international expats has created a wonderful melting pot of culinary options. From avant-garde cuisine to homespun delights, the choices are numerous. Fresh sushi, Italian, Thai, Pan-Asian, Mediterranean fusion and Mexican are just a few examples of what’s on offer. So whether you’re craving spicy nachos or a seared duck breast, rest assured it’s all possible in Tamarindo. On top of that – many of the local restaurants have regular happy hours, seasonal specialties and live music.

Wide Range of Accommodations: Brimming with hostels, resorts, vacation rentals and boutique hotels, Tamarindo has something for everyone – especially for those in search of oceanfront luxury. An increasing number of visitors are turning to Tamarindo vacation rentals to get more bang for their buck, as most are outfitted with fully-equipped kitchens and private pools and are just steps from the beach. In addition, many of the oceanfront villas and condos offer 24-hour security, wrap-around terraces with panoramic views plus top of the line home theater systems.

Shop Til’ You Drop: When you’re not out sportfishing, scuba diving, or just lazing by the beach, you can do some serious retail therapy in Tamarindo. Souvenirs range from colorful sarongs, hammocks and lovely hand-crafted jewelry to intricately-carved wooden bowls. New boutiques are popping up every year and Plaza Conchal has a nice selection of stores. And of course, the best souvenir of all is rich, delicious Costa Rican coffee – which you can pick up for a song in any local supermarket.

As a tourist from either Canada or the United States, your current driver’s license is valid during the duration of your permitted entry to Costa Rica – up to three months. Additionally, international driver’s permits issued by the AAA are also accepted.

Always keep a copy of your driver’s license and your passport with you when driving

Wear your seat belt – it’s the law.

Opt for a 4WD vehicle if your vacation plans include Monteverde or very rural areas – ask your car rental agency first

Watch the speed limits as tickets can run upward of $250

If at all possible, avoid driving at night when visibility may be poor

If you see an oncoming vehicle flashing their lights, that’s a signal to slow down for an impending broken down vehicle or a police check point

Do not leave valuables unattended in your car for long periods of time

Be wary of motorcyclists who often pass without warning

“Ceda” means yield and “Alto” means stop

If you’re involved in an accident with another vehicle, wait until police arrives before moving your car. Call 911 to report the crash.

GPS for local navigation

You may have heard about the roads in Costa Rica and how wild the drivers can be. In reality, the roads are no more challenging than those of any big city, as long as you are alert and drive defensively. While the signage often leaves something to be desired, most car rental agencies are happy to include a GPS for a nominal daily fee. These nifty gadgets are extremely useful and have more 30,000 points of interest, not to mention geographical features like lakes, volcanoes and rivers. If you get lost or are in doubt, always stop and ask for help. Costa Ricans are famously friendly people and will gladly point you in the right direction.

Did you know that Costa Rica is home to nearly five percent of the planet’s total biodiversity? For a country the size of West Virginia that equals thousands of species and a paradise for animal lovers. From coast to coast, this tropical nation offers exceptional wildlife watching opportunities, whether your interests lie in the cute and cuddly, the vibrant and vociferous, or creatures that slither around under the cover of darkness. Here’s a small sampling of some of Costa Rica’s most iconic species, and the best places to see them.

More on Costa Rica Nature Here

Capuchin monkeys

Also known as white-faced monkeys, these primates are considered the most intelligent of all new world monkeys. You can often hear their chatters and high-pitched squeaks long before you see these curious creatures moving about the treetops. Capuchins will dine on absolutely anything and are true omnivores of the forest. In Costa Rica, you can see them dining on ripened fruits, flowers, small insects, lizards and even bird eggs. Their populations are numerous throughout the country and they can easily be spotted in Cahuita National Park, Arenal, Carara National Park and Manuel Antonio National Park.

Two and Three-Toed Sloths

More About Costa Rica and What It Offers Here

These strange yet adorable animals spend most of their lives in the forest canopy, seemingly lazing their days away. Owing to their grayish-green fur, which perfectly camouflages against the treetops, they can be difficult to pick out without the eagle eyes of a naturalist guide. While they are notoriously slow movers, sloths are actually excellent swimmers, and have been seen fording rivers to get to their favorite food: the cecropia tree. Both varieties live in the wet lowland rainforests of Costa Rica and are best seen in traveler hotspots like Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero and in the Osa Peninsula.

Scarlet Macaws

This vividly-hued parrot ranges from Mexico down through parts of South America. In Costa Rica, the scarlet macaw prefers the jungles of Corcovado National Park and the dry tropical forest of Carara National Park – where an estimated 400 of the birds live and breed. Known locally as “lapas,” these birds are noted for their striking scarlet-colored feathers with blue and yellow plumage on their wings. They eat a varied diet consisting of nectars, fruit, seeds and wild nuts. Keep in mind that January through April is the macaw mating season, and the best time to view them in Carara. Most visitors to the park are based in a hotel or vacation rental in the Jaco area.

Leatherback Sea Turtles

The largest of all sea turtles, the leatherback tips the scales at more than 1,000 pounds and can grow to be up to six feet in length! These endangered marine reptiles can be seen on the shores of Las Baulas Marine Park, where females come to shore every year to nest. The park is located in Playa Grande, on the outskirts of Tamarindo beach. Their nesting season runs from October through March, when travelers can arrange an evening turtle tour to see Mother Nature in action. The leatherback turtle also nests in Ostional Refuge near Nosara, and along parts of the Caribbean coast.

Home to two international airports, Costa Rica welcomes more than two million tourists annually. The country has witnessed a huge boom in eco-tourism over the past decade and visitor numbers have been steadily climbing, with an anticipated 2.3 million travelers anticipated in 2013. When planning your next Costa Rica vacation – consider the various benefits of flying into the Juan Santamaria aiport (SJO) in San Jose, versus the recently expanded Daniel Oduber terminal in Liberia (LIR). Both feature easy access to popular beaches like Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo, and more airlines have added direct flights from major U.S. hubs.

Check out over 300 villas in Costa Rica we have to offer in several destinations

Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO)

Situated on the outskirts of San Jose in the bedroom community of Alajuela, the SJO airport handles the majority of Costa Rica’s tourist traffic. One of the country’s domestic carriers – SANSA airlines – is located adjacent to the SJO terminal, which is convenient for visitors who’ll be taking connecting flights to destinations like the Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero or the Nicoya Peninsula. When planning your itinerary, flying into the SJO airport makes most sense if you:

Are traveling strictly within the Central Valley, as the terminal is centrally located close to tourist attractions like La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Poas Volcano and the cultural highlights of San Jose.

Have booked a hotel or vacation rental home in Manuel Antonio, which is just 3.5 hours by car.

Want to explore the Central Pacific Coast, including beaches like Jaco, Esterillos, Bejuco , Manuel Antonio and Dominical.

Daniel Oduber (LIR) Airport

This international terminal finished a $42 million overhaul in 2012, and is the terminal of choice for travelers who are planning a holiday on the sun-dappled beaches of Guanacaste Province – in northwestern Costa Rica. Why choose this airport over SJO? It all depends on your travel plans. Liberia is recommended if you:

Are staying in a beach vacation rental or luxury villa in hotspots like Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, Playas del Coco or Papagayo.

Want quick access to your ocean view accommodations, as LIR airport is an hour’s drive from most popular beaches.

Have not included the Central Valley or beach destinations farther south on your vacation itinerary.

Check out our several Costa Rica beach vacation destinations

Travel Tips

There are two travel seasons in Costa Rica that coincide with the weather. The high tourist season, which runs from early December through late April is the dry season. Prices may be a bit higher for both accommodations and flights, but tourists can expect sunny skies with little rain. The low tourism period runs from May to late November and tempts travelers with discounted prices on everything from airline tickets to great deals on beachfront condos and vacation rentals. While tropical showers grace the countryside during this green season, visitors can enjoy the lush scenery and fantastic low prices.

Dozens of free-flowing rivers carve a path through Costa Rica’s terrain culminating in breathtaking waterfalls that invite travelers for a day of swimming, nature watching and relaxation. When planning your next vacation, consider a tour to one of these majestic cascades for a day of family fun. Quad tours, rainforest treks and horseback rides are all exciting ways to access these national treasures.

La Fortuna Waterfall Eco Tour

Check out our Villas we have to offer in the La Fortuna Area

Situated in the shadow of Arenal Volcano – one of the planet’s ten most active volcanoes – the bustling town of La Fortuna attracts thousands of visitors every year with its adrenaline-pumping tours and magnificent cascade that tumbles some 200 feet into an aquamarine pool. When taking a tour to the La Fortuna Waterfall, be sure to wear your swimsuit as the cool waters will beckon you for a refreshing swim. Most travelers arrive on a guided trip, either on horseback or an ATV excursion. From the entrance, a steep but well-marked path leads down to the falls. The 15-minute trek is worth the effort, as travelers are rewarded with stunning views and surrounding countryside.

Rio Celeste Waterfall Eco Tour

Perhaps one of Costa Rica’s best kept secrets, this natural wonder can be enjoyed in Tenorio Volcano National Park – located on the outskirts of Arenal. Famous for its celestial blue waters, which gain their ethereal hue from a mix of minerals and sulfur, the cascade is the centerpiece of this lightly-tread reserve. While hiking to the Celeste River Waterfall, visitors are guaranteed to encounter some of Costa Rica’s most iconic wildlife species, including howler and capuchin monkeys, coatimundis and tons of colorful hummingbirds. Wear sturdy hiking shoes if touring during the rainier months of June-October, as trails can get quite muddy.

El Chorro Waterfall Eco Tour

The beachside village of Montezuma is home to several lovely waterfalls, but none more awe-inspiring than El Chorro falls. Situated about five miles outside of town, this cascade is typically visited on a half-day horseback tour. The dramatic freshwater fall plummets off a rocky cliff into the ocean, where the sea changes colors from turquoise to green and blue. The cascade is also adjacent to the pristine white sands of Playa Cocolito, which lures beach lovers with its dazzling beauty.

Nuayaca Falls Eco Tour

Searching for tranquility amid nature? For the ultimate waterfall experience in Costa Rica, head to the beautiful hamlet of Dominical – an ocean side town known for its steady surfing waves and spectacular natural scenery. A three-hour horseback riding tour takes visitors to this amazing cascade that towers some 200 feet tall. Take a swim in the pure, clean waters that swirl beneath, or the more adventurous can even jump from the top ledge of the falls!

Boasting more than 200 volcanic formations, Costa Rica’s dramatic landscapes and eco attractions lure more than two million tourists every year. In total, the country has six volcanoes that are considered active – Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Poas, Turrialba, Irazu and Orosi. If you’ve ever dreamed of peering into the depths of a boiling crater lagoon or watching red lava rocks crash down volcanic slopes, then a visit to these three popular volcanoes is must on your next Costa Rica vacation.

Visiting Arenal Volcano

Click here to check out our villas we offer near Arenal Volcano

Flanked by verdant countryside, Arenal is considered one of the world’s top ten most active volcanoes, though it recently entered a more restful phase. Still, the 7,000 year-old wonder amazes tourists with huge plumes of smoke, loud rumbles and the occasional spurt of red lava rocks. The constant geothermal activity lends itself to numerous volcanic hot springs, which offer a healing respite after a long day of adventure tours in La Fortuna Costa Rica. Arenal Volcano is one of the most visited areas is Costa Rica and offers plenty of things to do and tours while on vacation. Take a hike through Arenal National Park, a 30,000 acre tract of protected cloud forest and rainforest, one can go horseback riding, zip line through tropical rain forest canopy, or simply enjoy the volcano views from one of several hot spring resorts that frame this looming giant.

Visiting Poas Volcano

At an elevation of 8,900 feet, Poas Volcano lies 35 miles from Costa Rica’s capital – San Jose. This is one of the Central Valley’s most famous attractions, and for good reason. Poas has the world’s second largest crater, measuring nearly one mile from end to end. Inside, a boiling lagoon churns with steamy waters that are deep aquamarine blue. There are plenty of family tours and activities that feature paved trails, easy hiking paths and an interactive museum. Poas Volcano National Park is an ideal day trip for tourists of all ages and interests. Try and visit early in the day for the best chances of spectacular crater views.

Visiting Irazu Volcano

Check out our several activities and tours we offer through out Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s tallest volcano at 11,260 feet, Irazu peers over Cartago, the Orosi Valley and parts of San Jose. The shining star of this volcano is its 3,445-foot wide main crater which is filled with bright green waters that change color depending on the season. The volcano is thought to have been active for the past 500 years and its last major eruption took place in 1963 – on a day made famous by a visit from President John F. Kennedy. Tourists are able to see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from the peak of Irazu on perfectly sunny days. The park is host to both cloud forest and sub-alpine paramo habitat and owing to its elevation, temperatures frequently dip into the 40’s. Be sure to wear warm clothing and pack a jacket if taking an Eco tour to this awesome natural wonder while on your Costa Rica vacation.

The Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is located at the southern point of the Nicoya Peninsula. It was actually the first protected area of this country and is considered today to be one the most beautiful Nature Reserves of Costa Rica. There is a small island called Isla Cabo Blanco that lies about 2 kilometers away from the tip of the reserve. It was given the name of Cabo Blanco, or White Cave, for the guano that covers the rocks giving it this whitish color. Cabo Blanco is a sea bird territory but this is off limits for the tourists. Huge numbers of birds, laughing gulls, brown pelicans, brown boobies and common terns all seem to cohabit in peace.

Check here for Montezuma beach rentals we offer in the area

The forest of the reserve is a nature’s splendor at its best and consisting of what is called Mixed Forest, or Tropical Moist Forest. Out of the 150 trees, the evergreens are the most common species. However, there are a few dry deciduous trees as well. Most of the forest of Cabo Blanco is a secondary forest with 15% of what is left of primary forest. The primary forest is actually inaccessible to many people for its elevated location. Some hikers might be able to make most of the reserve during dry season but the trails will still be challenging.

This lush verdant jungle is home to many exotic animals that include howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, anteaters, coyotes, armadillos, porcupines, coatis and white tailed deer. There is also an abundance of birds like the Motmot, Crested Caracara, Ringed Kingfisher and Sulfur-winged Parakeet amongst many others. Wild cats like the Ocelots and the Margay are present but usually run away from people. The Reserve also includes 18 hectares of the ocean where extraordinary sea life can be observed when snorkeling and scuba diving.

Learn more of the different Costa Rica National Parks here

Cabo Blanco is squeezed between two of Costa Rica’s most popular beaches, Malpais and Montezuma. Many visitors indeed take advantage of being in the area to visit this unique reserve. To reach the park one can come from Montezuma passing through Cabuya and there you will find the entrance of the park. There is a ranger’s station that gives information about the reserve, its trails and biodiversity. It is always best to arrive early to make the most of this unique gift of Costa Rica Nature. Also don’t forget to bring sun block, insect repellent, swimming gear and a change of dry clothes.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a major destination for the tourists who are coming to explore Costa Rica and its splendid wonders of Nature. The mysterious jungle is famous for being one of the best spots where you can see a beautiful Quetzal with its colorful plumage. This Cloud Forest Biological Reserve will take your breath away for its intact beauty and richness of flora and fauna.

Learn more about Costa Rica nature here

Monteverde is located in the province of Puntarenas just 45 minutes from Arenal Volcano. It’s about 4 and half hours away from San Jose which is the capital of Costa Rica. It is known to be one of the most outstanding nature reserves of the planet with its bio diversity and natural beauty. Cloud forests receive less rainwater than rain forest. However, they are by no means dry. Cloud forests are usually located at higher altitudes and hold on to the humidity.

Monteverde covers 8 biological reserves over an area of 10,522 hectares. It is home to over 100 species of mammals, over 400 species of birds, about 1200 species of amphibians and reptiles and probably more than 2000 species of trees and plants! The majestic beauty of this reserve equally awes travelers, nature lovers, biologists and scientists. Many of the species are on the endangered list and yet seem to thrive in Monteverde. Some of these exotic species that can be seen only in Monteverde include Jaguars, Pumas, Ocelots, Toucans, various species of monkeys, bellbirds and even the golden toad.

Further more, The Monteverde Cloud Forest is also home to more than 300 types of orchids and 200 types of ferns. You can admire both Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, especially if you indulge in one of the canopy tours offered. Monteverde has great hiking trails, skywalks, rappelling and zip Line canopy tours with suspended bridges. The best way to explore this cloud forest is by going on one of the famous Costa Rica zip line tours along the canopy as most life takes places high up there.

Check here for one of our Arenal Volcano Vacation Rentals we offer

Early morning or late afternoon just before sunset is the best times to see some exotic birds like the Quetzals or one of the many species of Humming Birds. The migrating birds pass through there between February and May. During this time most birds are nesting as well and make it easier to spot some.

The little town called Santa Elena is located at the entrance of the forest. A community of Quakers that came from the U.S. during the 50s originally founded Monteverde and Santa Elena. There is also a smaller park called Santa Elena that is similar to Monteverde. This little village is quite spread out but still forms a nice friendly community today. It is also known for its cheese that is one of the best made in Costa Rica and bears the name of Monteverde.

People still live a very simple life in Santa Elena, but it has all the amenities necessary so that tourists enjoy a pleasant and stress free stay. You will find a bank, a pharmacy, a small clinic, a variety of shops, internet cafes, bars, restaurants, and of course a good choice of Inns, Hotels and Eco Lodges. Bear in mind that due to the altitude of the Tilaran Mountain Range, it can get quite chilly there. So make sure to bring warm clothing. Monteverde is a quiet and peaceful place that is lovely for relaxing and to enjoy the natural wonders of Costa Rica Nature.

For learning more about visiting Monteverde and staying in one of our villas we offer in the area check us out at www.villascostarica.com or call 1 888 771-2976

However they are well worth the effort and the trip is always a beautiful adventure by itself.

Check out our Costa Rica vacation homes located in all popular surfing locations

Most beaches however are easily available by bus, plane or car if you wish to rent a vehicle. If you decide to fly, make sure to check with the airline that they can take your surf board. It is highly recommended to try and travel with just one board. It can be a real challenge as domestic planes are not so large and may not be able to accept your boards if they are full. For this reason, you might want to opt for a rental car. This gives you more flexibility and freedom to explore as well!

Generally speaking, the beaches are never crowded, with accommodations that vary in price to suit everyone’s tastes and budget. You will find surf board rental shops everywhere, and there are surf schools in most beaches. Many hotels offer surf packages and surf tours.

The Pacific coast offers good waves all year long as the Caribbean or Atlantic side season is more limited. These waves are a result of tropical storms off the coast of Mexico. The waves along the Pacific coast are mostly produced by the low-pressure depressions coming from New Zealand. While they are pretty consistent the best surf is between December and April.

Dominical is located in the province of Puntarenas, on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Mainly known for its great surf, this exotic paradise has waves that can reach 10 feet high thus it has gained a cosmopolitan reputation! This little town lies just 28 miles south of Quepos and of the beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park. The 4 kilometers long beach is an ideal place to lie back and relax. It is a lovely gateway hidden away from the crowds. Dominical is wild and pristine with a good choice of vacation villas, hotels and restaurants. Visitors love to take long strolls along the shore at night. The dinning is a particularly enjoying experience as well thanks to the abundance of fresh sea food which includes crab meat, lobster, shrimp and fish. These are always included on the menu, whether you choose one of the fanciest restaurant or the local soda.

Dominical enjoys a warm tropical climate all year long and a welcomed sea breeze during the night. Its surroundings include lush green wild forests and palm trees. It is of no surprise that so many visitors came and never left!

Check here to see more Dominical tours offered in the area

Dominical is better known for its surf and makes it a popular destination for surfers but it is great for sea kayaking as well. Scuba diving and snorkeling are available upon request in most vacation rentals and villas. Horseback riding tours to the Nauyaca waterfall is also highly in demand. You may also go on tours to the Manuel Antonio National Park and the Ballena Marino National Park. Whales frequent these waters 9 months of the year along this part of the Pacific Ocean. While the Humpback Whale is the favorite, there are six other species gathering there too along with many species of dolphins. Further south, about 95 kilometers, is the Osa Peninsula and the magnificent Corcovado National Park.

Other interesting activities include a day trip to Cano Island to explore some of the best reefs of the world and sports fishing. Further inland there is zip line canopy tours which is excellent for observing the wildlife and the forests. Also offered in Playa Dominical are bird watching guided tours which indeed attracts serious bird watchers from all over the planet. When in Dominical, one must visit Reptilandia, where you may safely observe reptiles and amphibians such as crocodiles, local snakes and frogs. For an authentic feel of the jungle inquire about the night guided tours in the Hacienda Baru.

Canopy Tours have become exceedingly popular in Costa Rica as they provide the tourists with a unique perspective when visiting the cloud and rain forests. The canopy is where most animals live and where you will find most of the flora and the fauna of the rainforest. Along the ground, which receives a lot less light, is usually quite dark and less plants and animals are found there.

Rainforests are the treasures of planet Earth. Who has not felt mystified when exploring the magical and mysterious jungle. This is the home to so many mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, trees and plants. Sadly, throughout the world, many forests are being destroyed to make room for agriculture or for the timber itself. In Costa Rica, the cloud and rainforest are now protected. Most of these areas are found in National Parks or Nature Reserves.

Interestingly, the invention of the zip line canopy tour has nothing to do with tourism. Some scientists were concerned that while studying the plants and animals living in the canopy they might cause some damage and so they came up with the zip lines. It permitted them to come close to everything but without actually touching it. Soon zip line canopy tour operators started to adapt them for tourism and it immediately caught on.

Check here for more family activities on your Costa Rica vacation

The equipment used in this country is top notch and extremely secure. Just make sure you deal with a reputable company. They use mountaineering gear similar to what climbers use to go up the mountaintops. The professional trained staff of these tour companies will personally take care of you and make sure that you are securely fastened in your harness. You should have two straps which the first one is for the ride and the other one is for backup.

Nowadays there are many companies offering a variety of canopy tours, zip lines and suspended bridge tours usually within the rainforest. Vacation villa rentals have also grown to offer these types of activities as well. This is without a doubt the best way to get rewarded with stunning panoramic views amongst birds, monkey, close to many of exotic animals and plants that you would never see you should be hiking.

While zip line canopy tours are not a vigorous activity, they are physical and not for the faint hearted. You will find yourself suspended on a cable some 20 to 30 meters above the ground. Indeed those suffering from vertigo will find that standing on the narrow platforms is actually the hardest part. There is no doubt that it is however a rewarding experience well worth the effort.

The Curu Wildlife Reserve is located in the province of Puntarenas, in the Nicoya Peninsula, by the little village of Curu. It became a protected forest in 1981 and the Curu National Wildlife Refuge was finally created in 1983. The family that originally settled on the land is still there today and they turned to the government for help in order to protect this little haven. The trails of the Reserve vary in range of difficulty. In fact some of these trails are only accessible during the dry season. Some of the easier trails to do include the Laguna, the Toledo, the Monos, the Finca and La Ceiba. Each trail represents a specific habitat, making the refuge resemble a life-size museum!

Check here for nearby Nicoya Peninsula vacation rental options for visiting the Refuge

Curu’s rich biodiversity attracts nature lovers, tourists and explorers alike for its abundance of flora and fauna. While the whole Reserve measures 1496 hectares, only 75 of it encompasses the refuge and the remaining land is used for low-impact agriculture.

The abundant wildlife of the refuge includes the Capuchin monkeys, the Howler monkeys, the Spider monkeys, peccaris, coyotes, coatis, anteaters and more. Seventy eight species of mammals have been discovered to date in Curu including some big cats like the pumas, ocelots and margay. However, because they are usually nocturnal and shy away from people, they are not very easy to see. Sightings of the Boa Constrictor are equally difficult as they usually escape at the approach of humans. Curu is actually home to 87 species of reptiles.

Bird watchers’ will feel in heaven with over 232 species, which is absolutely phenomenal when one considers the size of the reserve.
Curu also has a beautiful beach, rivers and mangroves estuaries. The types of mangroves in this small reserve encompasses the five species found in this country! The beaches in the reserve are also stunning and are the nesting ground for the Olive Ridley and the Hawksbill turtles that come to nest their eggs on the shore. The calm crystal clear waters of the bay are also perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The Curu reserve is an excellent destination for kayaking. There are many guided tours offered by the nearby lodges. Curu is privately owned so there are only basic rustic lodges onsite. The neighboring towns offer more comfortable accommodations. Curu is easy to reach by car or by bus. From Puntarenas you take the ferry to Paquera and the park is just 6 km away. Just continue to follow the directions to Tambor. The road to Curu is not paved and a 4X4 is a must once you enter the grounds of the Reserve. The Curu Reserve is opened every day from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Don’t forget to bring sun block, insect repellent, a change of clothing and of course a swimming suit.
