Located within the Central Volcanic range of Costa Rica, Turrialba Volcano has a new addition to its topography. The Costa Rican Volcano and Seismic Observation Center (Ovsicori-UNA) confirmed that a new turquoise hued acid lake has appeared at the Turrialba volcano. There are now three active volcanoes that have acid lakes in Costa Rica, including the Rincon de la Vieja and Poas.

The volcano is located within the Turrialba Volcano National Park, and the new lake is located within the largest of the three craters, which measures 164 ft (70 meters) in diameter. With a temperature of between 17 °C and 23 °C, results have shown that the lake is not as acidic or as warm as the Poas Volcano.

The last significant eruption was in 1866, but Turrialba Volcano continues to be active with plenty of smoke and gas activity noticeable from its highest peak and the nearby fumaroles. Vulcanologists have explained that since the increase in activity, hydrothermal conditions have changed and this has accelerated the erosion of the crater walls. (more…)

Smith stayed in a luxury vacation rental close to Quepos which was nestled on one of the many verdant foothills that contour Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast. The villa overlooked a deserted beach and included a 24 hour concierge service, “What a wonderful thing to have staff. It means that the mountain of washing-up that accrues with a large party does not become a source of acrimonious arguments.” Smith explained. (more…)
