The Costa Rican Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary in Cahuita Costa Rica made international headlines in the United Kingdom last November. A Daily Mail article documented the Sloth Sanctuary’s hard work looking after 100 orphaned sloths on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.  The Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary was set up by Luis Arroyo and Judy Avey after their first encounter with an orphaned sloth 18 years ago. From this moment on, the couple became locally known for their sloth caring skills and the creation of a sanctuary was a natural progression. (more…)

A proposal to assign additional funding to Playa Rey from Manuel Antonio National Park revenue was presented to the Costa Rican government by local community leaders on Friday the 30th of July.

Manuel Antonio National Park received more than 275,000 visitors in 2009, making it the most popular national park in Costa Rica. A green light for the Playa Rey beach proposal is seen as a positive move by many environmental experts, who are keen to encourage sustainable tourism in the Manuel Antonio area and tackle the parks tourist visitation density through the application of ecosystem management design. The Costa Rican government formally appropriated the land of Playa El Rey to Manuel Antonio National Park on November 17, 2000. This land added 14 kilometers of beach and increased the parks’ size to nearly 2000 hectares of land and 55000 hectares of marine area. The acquisition of Playa El Rey significantly extends the biological corridor of the National Park system to include the Naranjo, PortalĂłn and Savegre rivers. This is in addition to the already protected areas including the central mountain range of Costa Rica, Cerro Nara Protected Zone, Los Santos Forest Reserve and The Quetzal National Park. The Chamber of Commerce of Aguirre is currently drafting a plan to incorporate Playa El Rey into the corridor to make this connectivity possible. (more…)

On January 29, Manuel Antonio National Park marked its 37th anniversary by inaugurating fully accessible toilets and wash rooms within the park grounds. Allan Flores, Minister of Tourism, Jorge Eduardo RodrĂ­guez QuirĂłs, Minister of Environment and Energy, and MarĂ­a Luisa Ávila AgĂŒero, Minister of Health, were in attendance.

Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica’s most popular National Park and received over 300,000 visitors in 2009, but not without controversy. The Ministry of Salud threatened to close Manuel Antonio National Park in January 2009 when high levels of contamination were found on its coastline; largely attributed to inadequate facilities for tourists.
